PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Although PPG Paints Arena did not have fans in the building for the 2021 Pittsburgh Penguins season, improvements have been made to make the arena safer.

New improvements include disinfection technology for drones in the arena lower bowl, autonomous UV floor washers, touchless faucets and flush valves in all toilets, 200+ hand disinfection stations and improved cleaning protocols throughout the arena.

“Penguins and ASM Global employees have worked with local health officials and other professional advisors to ensure the safe return of Penguins hockey to the PPG Paints Arena,” said David Morehouse, President and CEO of Penguins. “These initiatives and guidelines will carry over to a post-COVID environment. We’ve also prepared for the return of fans, making improvements for a safe and efficient game night experience, including mobile ticketing, mobile ordering, and touchless self-checkout scanners for food and drinks. “

The Penguins, PPG Paints Arena, and ASM Global developed these protocols and enhancements based on recommendations from the CDC, EPA, and the World Health Organization. Many of these improvements are used in arenas around the world.

Aramark and the Penguins have also been working to complete the renovations across the arena to enhance the in-game dining experience.

Fans can also access a Penguins mobile app that has been updated to make it easier for fans to access a safer, more touch-free experience. These include mobile ticketing, a customized mobile wallet that fans can use to load their wallets with preferred payment methods for purchases in the arena, and a mobile order platform for fans where they can order food, drinks and goods.

The Penguins and PPG Paints Arena will provide more information as the season progresses and if and when fans can return.
