Dan Folger, the Pittsburgh Photographer Who Travels the World – Press Launch
Growing up in Pittsburgh was everything for Dan Folger because he learned a lot at this stage in his life. In Pittsburgh he got to know life in the truest sense of the word. That included waking up and going to work when it was freezing outside. He worked 7 to 3 jobs in a warehouse where weather conditions were not favorable. But he is grateful for this time of his life because he believes that being close to everything (the ghetto and the suburbs) helped him become a well-rounded person, which so far has helped him navigate through life’s challenges.
Folger is a 27-year-old photographer from Pittsburgh currently traveling the world, taking photos, and documenting everyday life and experiences wherever he is. Folger describes it as indescribable to be on tour with his team. So far he has worked with artists such as Asap Rocky, Travis Scott, Diddy, Mac Miller, Rick Ross and others.
Dan Folger also previously worked with recording artist Wiz Khalifa on the DayToday web series, and at the time they were considered inseparable by many. In addition to photography, Folger currently lives in Los Angeles, where he runs and operates his lifestyle brand, The GLD Shop, which sells clothing and jewelry.
As he grew up, Folger looked up to Derick G., who at one time was responsible for all photos and videos of YMCMB (Young Money Cash Money Billionaires). It was around this time that Folger got a personal camera, and all he ever wanted was to be like Derick. Folger describes his style and brand as unique and admits that there have been a number of changes over the past few years. He believes in consistent practice, and being true to what he believes in or is on his trail has helped him get to the point where he is right now. Folger carved out a niche for himself and says people can differentiate his photos from others. What set him apart was his famous watermark logo on his pictures, which became a statement.
Folger believes he has a knack for starting lots of new things. He said, “I work on several things at the same time, but that’s just me.” Dan began connecting with his childhood friend, Christian Johnston, and they came up with the idea of starting GLD, a jewelry and clothing store, that took the hip today – hop scene by storm. Starting from a small box of goods in the basement of Dan & Christian’s parents, the company has grown into a 20,000 square meter headquarters in Miami, Florida. Today the company has been dubbed the “Nike of Men’s Jewelry” and has completed one of the worst fiscal years in history with sales of over $ 50 million.
Folger wants young entrepreneurs to understand that nothing good is easy. And there is a need to prepare for a lot of bumps on the path to success. He said, “Often times you will want to quit, but you have to keep going. Taking risks is also very important. Every successful person has taken risks. It’s a must!”
