The Muppets invade Monday Night time Soccer.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football program will look a little different in week 15. The Pittsburgh Steelers will continue to face the Cincinnati Bengals, but it won’t be called “Monday Night Football”. It will be Muppet Night Football.

In order to bring festive holiday cheer to the crowd, the Muppets will invade Monday Night Football. According to the press release, Kermit and Miss Piggy will start the show at the studio at 8 p.m. ET. Fozzie Bear will report from the field, Statler and Waldorf will stand in the stands and Animal will play the drums. Where will he play the drums? And why? Who knows. It’s the muppets. Do you really need a reason why?

A teaser video for the show was released on Monday and has all the Muppet goodness you could want.

The Muppets will sing “Carol of the Bells” shortly before kick-off and reappear at various points during the evening.

All of this sounds great, but ESPN can – and should – go further. Put Gonzo and Rizzo the rat in the broadcast booth. Have Statler and Waldorf hit incidents every few games. Are you planning on Dr. Teeth and the Electrical Chaos as a halftime show. Have Fozzie and Miss Piggy interview players on the field after the game. Give Bunsen and Beaker a segment teaching the audience about the science of football, which would inevitably result in Beaker being crushed by one or more falling soccer balls.

The NFL is doing a kid-friendly Nickelodeon show in January. So why not an all-muppet show?
