PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Marathon 2021 is effectively canceled.
The city will not be issuing a permit for the Pittsburgh Marathon this year, effectively “canceling” the race.
City officials and P3R tried to plan a safe route for the marathon, but the city eventually decided May would be too early to hold such a large event.
“All of us in the city of Pittsburgh are optimistic that we can host personal events as soon as it is safe to do so,” Mayor Bill Peduto said in a press release. “We will continue to work closely with P3R over the coming weeks and months to host personal races and other events starting this summer.”
Registered participants have the opportunity to race virtually. If that doesn’t work, they can get a refund of their registration fee.
