A little over a week before Christmas, after months on the front lines caring for people during the pandemic, five Pittsburgh hospital workers became the first recipients in the city and among the first in the nation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. In a city that ranks among the top healthcare jobs in the country, it would be a mistake not to recognize the heroics of the brave doctors, nurses and other health workers in Pittsburgh in our People of the Year issue. We hope that you will join us in expressing our sincere thanks to them not only for the work they have done, but also for the work they will continue to do to look after our friends, family and neighbors during these unprecedented times .

But for this year’s edition of People of the Year, we’ve also found unsung heroes of the pandemic outside the hospital walls. A group of volunteers who worked non-stop to make sure the front line workers were protected. Organizations and businesses that have found ways to adapt to never-before-seen financial and physical constraints.

And this year brought more than just the coronavirus pandemic. After the police killings of Breonna Taylor in March and George Floyd in May, the world also faced one of the biggest civil rights battles of our lifetime. Protests against Black Lives Matter took to the streets and called for long overdue equality. In our People of the Year issue, we recognize a local group of activists who fought for the cause here in Pittsburgh and a young entrepreneur who has promoted black businesses across the city.

We also highlight one writer who published a book at the beginning of the year and ended the year with the publication of a second book, which received high critical acclaim. an art group that strengthened their community while building their brand; a journalist who became a one-woman labor movement; and a politician who inspires how he leads. We invite you to see all 10 of this year’s winners of the year of the year in the fields of politics, theater, visual arts, literature, activism, business, food and drink, health, music and work. During our 2020 coverage, we discovered that Pittsburgh is a city full of heroes, from the inspiring people who work in our hospitals every day, to the people who prepare our food, to the people who create the works of art, the we admire, right down to the people who fight for all our rights into the new year.

Here at Pittsburgh City Paper we’re ending this year in the hope that 2021 is better for all of you than last.
