Alcantara, Miami Marlins High Pittsburgh Pirates End Eight Recreation Loss Skid – NBC 6 South Florida
Sandy Alcantara played eight innings and ended the Miami Marlins’ longest losing streak in six years in eight games with a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Jesus Aguilar hit a long solo home run and added a sacrificial flight for Miami.
Alcantara (3-5) gave up one run and six hits and hit six. The right-hander allowed Adam Frazier a lead-off double in eighth place but knocked out the next three thugs to end his performance.
It was the second time in his last three starts that Alcantara had completed eight innings.
The Marlins lost eight times in a row from May 15-22, 2015. They gambled away two eighth-inning leads, a one-run lead in a 5-3 loss on Thursday, and a three-run lead in the first three games of that series, before losing 8 -7 in 12 innings on Saturday.
Yimi Garcia put in a perfect ninth inning for his tenth save.
Pirates starter Chad Kuhl (0-3) allowed two well-deserved runs and three hits in six innings.
Shortstop Erik Gonzalez fumbled one throw while covering the second after Corey Dickerson grounded on second base in sixth against Frazier, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored from second place, despite having some trouble walking home after being hit with his right foot to reach the base.
Aguilar followed with a sacrificial fly to turn another run.
Aguilar hit a 444-foot home run, his 12th, in the left field stand to tie it in the second 1-all.
After giving an RBI double to Colin Moran in the first inning, Alcantara only got into trouble again in the fifth inning when Ben Gamel took the lead with a ground rule double. Michael Perez ended up in first place, Kuhl beat with Gamel in third place, and Frazier finished the inning.
Moran was activated from the 10-day injury list on Sunday after sidelining with left groin complaints since May 8.
ROSTER MOVE
Pirates INF Cole Tucker was selected for Triple-A Indianapolis. He was 2 for 15 with an RBI in eight games (three starts) with Pittsburgh that season.
