Ann Roth, born in Hanover, wins the Oscar for greatest costume design for ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Backside’ – CBS Pittsburgh

HOLLYWOOD (KDKA) – Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” filmed and made history here in Pittsburgh, won awards at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards.

First, Ann Roth, an 89-year-old Hanoverian from Pennsylvania and a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, won the Oscar for best costume design.
This is Roth’s fifth costume design Oscar win, won in 1984, 1986, 1999 and 2002.

She is also linked to James Ivory and Agnes Varda as the oldest candidate.
Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson made history and became the first black winners in the makeup and hairstyling category.
“I’m standing here when Jamika and I break this glass ceiling with so much hope for the future,” said Neal. “I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it will just be normal.”
