College students from throughout the county deserve achievement
Retassie, Mack are athletes for November
North Star High School selected Abby Retassie and Jeremy Mack as Boswell Jaycees Athlete of the Month for November.
Retassie is the daughter of Tony and Alyson Retassie, Boswell. She is a 12th grade dual student attending volleyball, basketball, pep club, varsity club, prom committee, and community arts club.
Mack is the son of Michele Mack and Jeremy Mack, Acosta. He is a 12th grade college prep student participating in the Archery Club, soccer, and hockey.
Diaz at Somerset Lions
Katrina Anne Diaz, Peace, was named Somerset Lions Student of the Month in November.
She is the daughter of Heidi Diaz and a Somerset Area High School graduate. She is a member of the Forensics Speech Team, Color Guard, Musical and Spanish Club. She is listed in the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
She is a mentor at Outdoor Odyssey and teaches Sunday School in St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Diaz plans to study pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh.
She has been taking dance lessons since she was five and has been playing the piano for six years. She hikes and enjoys kayaking.
Plunkard is a Soroptimist student
Taylor Plunkard, Windber, was awarded the Windber Area High School’s Soroptimist Volunteer Award.
Plunkard is the daughter of Misty Plunkard and John Plunkard. She is attending the Academic Course at Windber where she attends the SADD Club, the Yearbook Club as Secretary, the Health Science Club, the Student Council, the FCA, and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. She also plays college softball.
Plunkard achieved honorary rank in the ninth grade and a high honorary rank in the 10th grade.
She participates in the U19 girls’ national team Armstrong Arrows Hockey. She is a junior fire department volunteer with the Windber Area Fire Department, where she makes calls when they arrive. She helps the senior firefighters by getting them the tools they need and also by cleaning up any debris that is left over. She is also responsible for producing ID cards for each member.
Plunkard’s future plans are to go to the Naval Academy, where hopefully she would continue her education to become a pilot or something in the medical field. She enjoys neuroscience or psychology.
Plunkard’s hobbies are painting, drawing, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family.
