SALEM – David P. Macry, 78, of Salem, died at 3:31 a.m. on Wednesday June 9, 2021 at UPMC-Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh after a sudden illness.
He was born on October 7, 1942, in Salem, Ohio, to the late Francis Lawrence and Leafey Lorraine (Hemphill) Macry.
David was born and raised in the area. He graduated from Leetonia High School in 1960 and then served for three years in the US Navy. After the Navy, he returned to the Salem area. He later moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he lived with his family for 20 years before returning to Salem.
David has worked in various industries throughout his life and met many interesting people. He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Paul and briefly taught history at the Catholic School of St. Paul.
He had a very strong and varied interest in sports. David was a huge Notre Dame soccer fan and also loved the New York Yankees, Cleveland Browns, and Montreal Canadiens. David was a very good golfer and enjoyed playing with family and friends all his life. He also played baseball and participated in boxing matches while serving in the Navy. One of David’s favorite hobbies was pool shooting, and he even fulfilled his lifelong dream of running a pool hall in Brooklyn, NY after he retired. In 2018 he was inducted into the Leetonia High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He and his wife Pam lived a very quiet life. They enjoyed traveling to the Bahamas, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Toronto, Canada and especially visiting their children and grandchildren. David was a member of the Italian-American Club of Salem.
David is survived by the love of his life of nearly 50 years, the former Pamela Ann Downing, whom he married on August 21, 1971; his two sons and their beautiful brides James “Jay” (Bettina) Macry from New Jersey and Michael (Jennifer) Macry from NC; and his four grandchildren whom he loved and adored so much, Paige, Benjamin, Madeline and Sabrina; his siblings Toni Beeson, Joan (Scott Montgomery) Macry, Joseph Macry and Donna (Charles “Beam”) Queen, all from Columbiana, and Christopher Macry from Florida; and brother-in-law, James (Marilyn) Downing from Salem.
In addition to his parents, his brother-in-law Robert went to him. ahead in death “Bobby” Beeson.
