Jeff Parker visits his mother Ginger through a plastic wall at the Katherine Luther Nursing Home near Utica. Ginger Parker, who suffered from end-stage brain cancer, died this month after contracting Covid-19. The virus has killed thousands of nursing home residents across New York state, but the total was never reported.

The Real Number of Covid Fatalities in New York Nursing Homes: The Covid pandemic has taken a terrible toll on New York state nursing homes, but the true extent of the heartache was unknown. An investigation by Syracuse.com found there were many more coronavirus deaths among nursing home residents than the state reported. After our story was published, New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report that independently estimated nursing home deaths nationwide to be 50% higher than advertised. Hours later, in response to James’ report, state health officials released new numbers that increased the number of nursing home deaths from Covid-19 by 43%.

The woman killed was remembered as a friendly, dedicated educator: Eva Fuld loved traveling to stay sharp in French and Spanish, which she had taught for decades. As a retiree, the Syracuse woman enjoyed lunch with friends and volunteered at a local library. The violent way in which 84-year-old Fuld died last week – killed by robbers in a home invasion, police said – shocked and appalled her friends, former students and co-workers. They had a mission: to be remembered for her brilliant life, not her violent death.
