GUT seal for health and safety assessment
The WELL Health Safety Rating by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) is an evidence-based, third-party verified rating for all new and existing building and space types that focuses on operational guidelines, maintenance protocols, stakeholder engagement and contingency plans Post-COVID-19 environment now and in the future.
“The health and safety of our students and staff, as well as others who use our school facilities, remains our top priority,” said Dr. John Rozzo, Superintendent of Schools. “The WELL Health Safety Seal is further proof that we sincerely strive to create the safest possible environment for teaching and learning.”
The WELL Health-Safety Rating is designed to empower organizations to take the necessary steps to prioritize the health and safety of their employees, visitors and stakeholders. It can help guide users in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and instill confidence in those who are getting through the building as well as the wider community.
“Our schools not only serve as a learning environment for children, but also as a workplace for teachers and staff and a meeting point for communities,” said Rachel Hodgdon, President and CEO of IWBI. “We applaud the Upper St. Clair School District for its leadership and commitment to evidence-based interventions that are paving the way for schools throughout this pandemic period.”
In addition, the Upper St. Clair School District has developed a solid plan to renew the rating annually and meet the strict criteria year after year.
“Our work to date has ensured and confirmed that we have coordinated systems and deliberate efforts across the district to improve the environment by making it the healthiest and safest for our students and staff,” said Dr. Lou Angelo, director of operations and facilities, said. “We will continue to make the review and evaluation of products, practices, training and assessments related to our cleaning protocol, building systems, emergency preparedness and health services a major focus of our program.”
To achieve the WELL health and safety rating, the Upper St. Clair School District validated current practices and improved others, e.g. B. the increase in the environmentally friendly cleaning products used.
“I’m particularly excited to share our district’s move towards preferred cleaning products and, in particular, the transition to Green Seal certified or recommended products,” said Dr. Angelo. “These products are proven to be safer for our school community and the environment.”
The Upper St. Clair School District was awarded the WELL Health-Safety Rating after successfully completing the documentation review by a third party to confirm that all requirements were met.
In pursuing the WELL Health-Safety Rating, Upper St. Clair has partnered with Advantus Engineers, LLC, led by Alicia Avick. In addition to being the president of the engineering firm, Ms. Avick is an Upper St. Clair High School graduate and the parent of two Upper St. Clair high school students.
“As an engineer who has invested so much in sustainable and healthy buildings, and as a parent, I was impressed with all of the steps Upper St. Clair took to keep our children in their school buildings,” said Ms. Avick. “Working with our experienced Director of Sustainability, Angelica Ciranni, to review and refine the big steps already taken, validates these efforts and provides a science-based framework for further development.”
The WELL Health-Safety Rating, launched in July 2020, was developed with recommendations from nearly 600 experts from the fields of public health, medicine, design, real estate, government and science. The rating is administered by the International WELL Building Institute, whose mission is to improve human health and well-being in buildings and communities around the world.
According to Dr. Angelo promotes a healthy and safe physical school environment for learning by ensuring the health and safety of students and staff.
“Our priority is to create an environment that optimizes learning and protects the health and wellbeing of students and staff,” said Dr. Angelo. “We will continue to do everything we can to ensure that the schools in our community are among the best – ecologically and educationally.”
