Hill District Enterprise, volunteers serve 1,000 Thanksgiving meals
Salem’s Market and Grill held a drive-through and walk-up Thanksgiving dinner competition Thursday. Families in the Hill District of Pittsburgh received their meals in the former Shop ‘n Save parking lot. Several local partners brought in thousands of groceries to help the volunteers serve about 1,000 meals. “I am blessed to have family, I have friends, I have this food that I received. I am grateful that God has given me another breath and another day to wake up in the morning, ”said Sandra Barbour. Barbour drove through the line to get food for her family. All meals were packaged for take away, but Abdullah Salem is hoping to have a Thanksgiving giveaway buffet next year. If God wills, the place will open next year and everyone will have dinner with us and have Thanksgiving dinner here and we will all break bread together, ”Salem said. Salem hopes to have a new Salem store in the former Shop ‘n Save Space by June 2022. Pittsburgh Mayor-elect Ed Gainey stopped by to show his support for Salem’s Market and his new role in the Hill District. “I think it’s a great opportunity. It’s about bringing the community together and I think this is a great way to do that,” said Gainey. Gainey joined the group of volunteers serving meals to the people of the Hill District and said he was proud that this market will fill this space the Hill District has chosen us, we are very honored by the families, Selected from companies and all members of the entire district. The primary aim of this Thanksgiving meal was to give back to the community by introducing ourselves to the community and reaching out to all those in need during this family time, ”Salem said. Retired Pittsburgh police officers Brenda Tate and Tonya Ford, who owns their own security company, volunteered to keep the giveaway and direct traffic safe. Both were born and raised in the Hill District and are passionate about serving others. “We grew up in this community so we know the people, we know the passion of Salem and are just ready to do what we can to make sure people have a blessed holiday,” said Tate.

“Unfortunately, for safety reasons, we want everyone to practice safety and eat at home. If God willing, the place will be ready next year and everyone will eat here with us and have Thanksgiving dinner here and we will all break bread together, ”Salem said.
Salem hopes to open a new Salem’s Market location in the former Shop ‘n Save Space by June 2022.
