I-579 in a single day lane restrictions, ramp closures subsequent week in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 announces lane restrictions and ramp closures for the I-579 “Cap” Urban Connector project in the city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, which will continue on Monday evening April 5th weather permitting.

The overnight work for the lighting installation takes place every night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and requires the following restrictions:

Monday April 5th

  • Shoulder and lane restrictions to the north

  • Closing the Bedford Avenue ramp to I-579 south

  • Closing 7th Avenue ramp to I-579 south

Tuesday April 6th

  • Shoulder and lane restrictions to the north

  • Closing the Bedford Avenue ramp to I-579 south

  • Closing 7th Avenue ramp to I-579 south

Wednesday April 7th

  • Shoulder and lane restrictions to the south

  • Closing the Bedford Avenue ramp to I-579 south

  • Closing 7th Avenue ramp to I-579 south

The $ 29.34 million project, sponsored by the City of Pittsburgh and the Sports and Exhibitions Authority, consists of building a structure over I-579 that connects downtown Pittsburgh to the Hill District. In part, the Cap project will create a new three-hectare green space that includes pedestrian paths, bicycle routes, rain gardens for rainwater management and design elements by artists from the neighborhood. Additional construction activities include retrofitting existing retaining walls and bridges to accommodate the new structure, rebuilding roads, improving drainage, traffic signals, highway lighting, ITS and landscaping.
