INDIANA COUNTY, PA (KDKA) – A judge sentenced an inmate to 50 to 100 years in prison for shooting two state troops during a prisoner transport in 2019.

On Monday, the Pennsylvania State Police said Simere Alford had been convicted of attempted murder of a first degree law enforcement officer and related crimes.

According to the authorities, two state troops transported Alford from the Clymer District Court to the Pine Grove State Penitentiary after a hearing on June 24, 2019. Alford escaped his bonds and rushed between the two car seats.

He managed to grab a soldier’s weapon, which was holstered around the officer’s waist. Alford then shot the soldier in the driver’s seat, authorities say.

Police say the bullet almost hit the side of the soldier’s head before exiting through the car’s windshield. A fight ensued before the patrol car crashed into a guardrail about 300 feet north of Pine Grove State Correctional Facility.

Police say the soldiers got out of the car and managed to regain control of Alford. They held him until more soldiers reacted to the scene.
