MONESSEN (KDKA) – The city guides in Monessen now have to take part in special training courses after certain violations have become known.

A Westmoreland County judge ruled that Monessen Mayor Matthew Shorraw and city council members unknowingly violated the Sunshine Act twice in January.

The judge’s verdict said there was no opportunity for public comment when the city fired the lawyer and the administrator hired their successors.

“The city is glad that the court found no breach of due process and found that penalties and other sanctions were not justified,” the city of Monessen said in a statement. “The city certainly also respects the court’s decision regarding a technical breach that was later resolved. I think the city and everyone involved can be happy that this matter is closed. The council, as a team, will continue to focus on addressing the bigger challenges facing the city and its residents in order to move the city in a positive direction. “

The Sunshine Act required the public to attend, participate, and provide comments before an agency could take official action.
