PITTSBURGH (AP) – Federal prosecutors in western Pennsylvania say a man is bringing charges against the federal government in connection with an incendiary device thrown from a moving vehicle into a parked sport utility vehicle over the weekend in Pittsburgh.
The US law firm said 33-year-old Charles Baker has been charged with the illegal possession of an unregistered destructive device and the crime of possession of a destructive device. Prosecutors said he was also charged as a criminal in possession of a firearm, the device, that stemmed from previous break-ins, violations and drug abuse convictions.
Police said the device was thrown from a moving pickup truck shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday in the rear passenger area of the parked SUV in the Lawrenceville neighborhood. No injuries were reported. Police initially investigated a later explosion in the Hill District but said they believe it had nothing to do with it and may have resulted from air fireworks.
Prosecutors said Wednesday the truck had been found and another man, unnamed, told them Baker asked him for a ride on Sunday, but while driving he pulled out some sort of device that set it on fire with a lighter and threw it out window.
Court documents do not include an attorney for Baker and a listed phone number for him could not be found on Wednesday.
