Local artists want to encourage the people of Pittsburgh to take a new look at the city in future projects.

Thomas Vang HoutCityVisions, a self-proclaimed conceptual artist and experience designer, has launched a public art exhibition that distributes 50 telescopes throughout the region for people to find and enjoy. “One of the collaborators on this project came up with the idea of ​​replacing these tourist binoculars with a kaleidoscope, from which the City Visions idea evolved,” he says. “It’s been bouncing behind my head for three years, but now it’s time to make it a reality.”

His work “emphasizes the effects of perception and perspective and investigates the subjectivity of the human visual process,” he adds.

Van Hout says he has a background in biomedical engineering, but after spending a few years in this area he was ready to try something new. He traveled the country for six months hoping to discover what he really wanted in life and realized that art really impressed him.

Coincidentally, his artistic journey began in Pittsburgh when he saw James Turrell’s permanent installation at Mattress Factory. From there, he says he went to San Francisco and started experimenting with the project.
