Pet meals for poisonous mildew linked to 28 canine deaths – CBS Pittsburgh
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO-TV) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday recalled certain types of mixed-use pet foods due to toxic aflatoxin levels.
Regulators say they are aware of 28 dogs that have died from the toxic mold and eight that have become sick. Alfatoxin is made by a mold that can grow on corn and other grains that are used as ingredients in pet food. The Missouri Department of Agriculture tested samples of Sportmix strains and found very high levels of toxin.
Symptoms of alfatoxin poisoning in pets include sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and / or diarrhea. People whose pets have eaten Sportmix products are recommended to call their veterinarian, especially if their pets show symptoms.
According to the FDA, there is no evidence that people who handle food are at risk of alfatoxin poisoning.
