PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Coming up on Tuesday you can do what some of your favorite athletes and teams do, support the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Mostly due to the coronavirus pandemic, there is currently a 42% rise in food insecurity in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The highest increase in the 40 years of the organization.
All of the local professional sports teams have lent a hand. Fundraisers with the local colleges. WPIAL and City League basketball teams banded together recently to raise $70,000.
They are doing what they can to help those in need.
“When professional athletes who you admire,” said GPCFB Vice-President Brian Gulish. “You look up to. You watch on TV are handing you a turkey and a fixing box to help you provide your family with a Thanksgiving meal. There’s gratitude. There is so much appreciation. If those athletes can lift the spirits of someone who is struggling, that is so important.”
Gulish says Steelers Cam Heyward and Maurkice Pouncey would host distributions and they would recruit a number of players. He said they would enjoy the interactions as much as those receiving.
“You really see the smile on their faces,” Gulish said. “They are seeing a simple picture or handshake, during non-COVID times. So many individuals they impact with food and shear happiness to take their mind away from whatever hardships they are having at the time.”
Heyward and Pouncey are just a couple 100% onboard. Gulish says one of the first things Don Kelly did after the Pirates hired him was to help the food bank.
Sidney Crosby cut a check to provide 100,000 meals when the pandemic started and the Penguins have hosted multiple events, same with the Riverhounds. Massaro Construction donated $20 for every Pitt basketball assist this year, for the second consecutive year. Several teams from all of the local colleges have participated.
“It brings a smile to their face,” Gulish said. “Even at the one distribution, the Pirate Parrot came out. For people driving by, they are putting their windows down and taking photos and waving.”
Not many of us have that star power to provide an instant smile, but there are ways we can follow the athlete’s lead.
Entercom Pittsburgh, which includes 93.7 The Fan, is hosting The Giant Eagle Feed the Need Radiothon. You may think you don’t have the financial resources to help. But, because of donations and bulk purchasing, one dollar sent to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank can provide 5 meals. The cost of a cup of coffee can provide 25 meals. Twenty bucks allows 100 to eat.
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank says 370,000 people in the 12 local counties they serve are food insufficient. What that means is there may be some food on the table, but often meals are skipped. Parents have to make the decision to feed their children while they go without.
Some families have to choose between paying bills and eating. Some families go without entirely.
Think of that number this way, if you filled the Petersen Events Center 29 separate times. That still would not equal the number of local family members who need help.
