PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – FBI agents in Pittsburgh have arrested and charged a man who they say threatened law enforcement and allegedly praised attacks on America.
Khaled Miah, 27, is from Bangladesh and moved to the United States with his family. In 2009 he became an American citizen. He was a student at the University of Pittsburgh.
Miah faces federal charges, including interstate threat communications influencing a federal official by threatening and destroying records.
The court filings accuse Miah of using a Twitter account and other electronic means to post threatening and destructive messages.
The affidavit states that Miah has already been investigated and used technology “to threaten, harass, obstruct, intimidate and avenge federal investigators and their families, and to obstruct and restrict the federal investigation into his actions hinder “.
Investigators said a message related to the September 11, 2001 attacks, allegedly saying “We are currently eating pasta and watching videos of the second plane that hit the South Tower.” Another message reportedly said: “Zero hour is approaching.”
According to investigators, Miah spent some time in Washington DC visiting major landmarks and in Boston where the marathon bombing took place.
During an interview, investigators said that “a staff member” of Miah spoke of being “mentally unstable and attracted to a violent Islamic ideology.”
The FBI says they have other videos, photos and documents related to the case.
The Trib reports that Miah is being held for a hearing this afternoon.
