Pittsburgh Military Corps hosts ribbon slicing ceremony to reopen the dam

PITTSBURGH, PA (WTAJ) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Pittsburgh District will host an open house on Thursday, May 27th to celebrate the reopening of the East Branch Dam.

The event will be held on East Branch Clarion Lake at 631 East Branch Dam Road in Wilcox, Pennsylvania, 15870. Ribbon cutting lasts from 10 a.m. to 10.45 a.m., followed by an open house from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Construction work to repair the dam began in 2014, which had a high level of urgency for the repair assessment in 2008. The summer and winter pools were reduced by 20 feet to relieve pressure on the dam and to add a partition wall during the project.

The ribbon cutting ceremony not only marks the completion of the project, but also marks the return to the normal pool level of 1670 feet.

“This renovation has been a daunting undertaking and will continue to support the safety of the dam and the Army Corps’ long-term risk mitigation plan while our community and all of its visitors enjoy the East Branch Clarion River Lake for years to come,” said the US Representative. Glenn Thompson said in a press release.

The open day is free and open to the public. Guests are asked to wear close-fitting flat shoes, wear a mask and, if possible, maintain social distance. Both the ceremony and the open house will take place in rain or shine.
