On Wednesday, PPS announced that Superintendent Anthony Hamlet is seeking support from students, parents and staff on the first day of school. The district said the next academic year was planned with the idea that students and staff study full-time five days a week.

“Our calendar is designed to maximize our time with students assuming all students and staff will return full-time in August 2021,” Superintendent Hamlet said in a press release. “We know that the first day of school can set the tone for the coming year. That’s why we want everyone involved to cast their vote for the first day of school.”

The district offers two options for students, staff, and parents. The first has a start date for students on August 23rd and an end date for students on June 7th. The second option has a start date for students on August 25th and an end date for students on June 9th.

The Pittsburgh Public Schools also announced that the closure of snow days due to technology investments will be replaced with flexible class days for the 2021-22 calendar.

“Flexible class days allow students to participate in asynchronous class rather than losing a school day and / or the possible extension of the school year,” said a press release from the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

The district added that Eid al-Fitr will be a school holiday in 2021-22.
