The shocking triple homicide of the Roiling Humboldt County family
via Facebook Shelly Moon’s nocturnal meeting with her cousins came to an abrupt and bloody standstill in the early hours of a clear Wednesday morning. On the Bear River Band on the Rohnerville Rancheria Reservation in Northern California, Margaret, mother of 16-year-old Moon, a Bear River tribe member found the group drinking alcohol on February 10 at around 3:30 am, according to a police search warrant affidavit. The family had picked up the cousins within 30 minutes. But at some point, according to the authorities, a resident of the house invited the then 18-year-old Mauricio Johnson, who is also related to the Moon family and the indigenous people, to the home. And within two hours of the cousins’ departure, statements from the family and those familiar with the events – some of them second-hand – contained in the affidavit indicate that Margaret Moon’s fiancée Nikki Metcalf Johnson “gets along” with her daughter. Metcalf Allegedly Beat Johnson According to an affidavit containing information from Scott Hicks, the Humboldt County’s sheriff’s investigator, there was a fatal turnaround. Johnson shot him and Margarett Moon before also fatally shooting teenage Shelly Moon and escaping to Utah, as stated in the Utah State Bureau of Investigation’s affidavit. The reason? “Because he didn’t want any witnesses,” said a statement in the affidavit. “La Llorona” is a fascinating horror film about the “silent holocaust” against tribal peoples Now Johnson, who was arrested on a murder warrant in Utah by the Humboldt District Attorney’s Office after she was allegedly found with his mother Melissa Johnson and her boyfriend Von Keener, is being held without bail. According to William Honsal, Humboldt County’s sheriff, he is also fighting his extradition to California. The single family crime that shocked this small community just off Highway 101 highlighted the widespread problem of violence against indigenous people, especially women. A 2016 study by the National Institute of Justice found that more than four out of five Native American and Native women in Alaska experienced violence, while Justice Department investigations in 2008 found Native women murdered more than ten times in some tribal countries Average in some places. With a National Movement for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) calling for awareness and justice around this crisis, crimes like this show the real stakes. A situation like this or something would be Margarett, Nikki and Shelly, you know? Cameron Moon, 22, who is related to Shelly and Margarett Moon, told The Daily Beast. “So to hear it was all three … honestly, I burst into tears.” Cameron Moon said he remembered Shelly volunteering for the local elementary school to tutor the students. He described her as a “giving heart,” just like her mother. In Humboldt County, authorities were made aware of the murders at around 8:15 a.m. on Feb.10, when Shelly Moon’s surviving 13-year-old sister dialed 911. According to an affidavit, it’s just a tragedy, “Sheriff Honsal told The Daily Beast. We can’t remember a time when we had a triple homicide during my tenure here. That took this community by surprise and we’re all devastated. ”Shelly Moon and Metcalf were both found dead while Margarett Moon was alive and According to affidavit, she was transported to the nearest trauma center. She later succumbed to her injuries. All three had bullet wounds to the head. David Moon, 32, the nephew of Margarett Moon, who previously lived with the family, said his sister only had his daughter and niece Picked up from home 30 minutes before the shooting, adding that his sister told him Johnson, the accused murderer, was “acting weird.” “. David Moon also said he learned from another cousin who lived with Margarett Moon and her family that Johnson and Keener knocked “frantically” on their door to get a ride before Johnson allegedly escaped the state later that morning As for the affidavit, Mauricio Johnson’s brother Damon said the defendant came to his home early in the morning of February 10 with a gun and blood on his clothes. Mauricio Johnson allegedly told him that “he shot someone and later made it clear that he shot several people.” The affidavit states that after the shooting, authorities were able to track Melissa Johnson’s vehicle because it was purchased from Sole Savers, a car dealer. Authorities were then able to locate this vehicle along with another Mauricio Johnson-related vehicle in Utah. Around 11 a.m. on February 11, the Utah Highway Patrol caught up with vehicles driving in front of each other 30 miles west of Salt Lake City, according to Sergeant Evan Kirby of the Utah Highway Patrol. He told The Daily Beast they had their emergency lights turned on, and while the vehicle with Melissa Johnson stopped immediately, the other kept moving. He said the police had thrown spikes and after about two miles the vehicle with Johnson and Keener stopped in the middle of the freeway. He said the officers would then “safely take her into custody.” You didn’t resist or anything. You followed our orders. Stephen Colbert blames Trump’s “kung flu” racism for anti-Asian hate crimes. Melissa Johnson has since been released without charge, but Sheriff Honsal said charges of aiding and abetting may be brought in the future. Keener was arrested for a parole violation and faced charges of aiding and abetting. He is being held in Humboldt County Prison without bail. Melissa Johnson has not returned any comments. Attempts to contact Mauricio Johnson and Keener’s lawyers were unsuccessful. According to Sheriff Honsal, the California attorney general has issued an arrest warrant for the governor in the Utah Supreme Court asking for Johnson to be sent back to Humboldt County. Sheriff Honsal said he expected Johnson to be back in custody in California within the next four weeks. Maggie Fleming, district attorney for Humboldt County, said her office had three murders against Mauricio Johnson as well as “specific allegations for the use of the gun and for the commission of several murders. “She added,” As soon as he is extradited, he will be charged on these charges. “When asked about the Melissa Johnson and Keener charges, she said the investigation was still ongoing,” but currently no indictments David Moon, who started a fundraiser to raise money for the victims’ families, said Mauricio Johnsons Mother Melissa and Margarett Moon actually grew up together. He described his late Aunt Margarett as someone who “would always do what she could to help anyone”. He said she was depressed, but things started to improve after she met Metcalf and worked at the local elementary school. “She was in a really bad place before she met Nikki,” he said. “And then when Nikki came they had to be happy…. He was like everything she needed. And he treated my little cousins like they were his children. Josefina Cortez, chairwoman of Rohnerville Rancheria’s Bear River Band, told The Daily Beast they were unwilling to make a public statement about the incident but confirmed that tribal police were involved. Jesse Armstrong, 31, said he had two Working with Margarett Moon for years through his role as parent-teacher-facilitator for the county’s Department of Health and Human Services, and coaching her surviving 13-year-old daughter’s basketball team, The Daily Beast told The Daily Beast that she was along with other members of her space -Native teams spent the 2019 season raising awareness about MMIW. They put red handprints on their mouths to play games symbolizing violence against indigenous women and wrote the name of a woman who has been missing since 1991 on their arms and legs. Armstrong said just months before the young girl was found her family had been killed, she was very committed to the subject and was trying to plan an out-of-state education game. “It’s just strange that a year ago they supported the movement with me in basketball, and now they’re part of the statistics,” he said.
