President and CEO Dr. Barbara Baker retires from management roles at Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium is retiring after 31 years at the helm of the organization.

The Zoological Society says that Dr. Barbara Baker was a trailblazer throughout her time at the zoo.

When she was hired decades ago, she was the youngest manager of a zoo in the country.

She was also the only female zoo director in the United States as tall as Pittsburgh’s.

“I am very, very proud and honored to serve. But I’m also really looking forward to my next big adventure, ”she said. “I’m looking forward to retirement. I look forward to doing things with my family, playing with my grandchildren, spending time with my family in North Carolina. And ride my horse. So I plan to ride into the sunset and have a great time. ”

Until her successor is found, Dr. Baker run the zoo.

She will also work as a consultant until the end of 2022.
