Salem’s Market and Grill has been selected to open a grocery store on the former Shop ‘n Save site in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the city said on Monday. The suggestions were posted online and discussed at a community meeting where feedback was obtained from residents. Salem’s has proposed a full service grocery store of produce, meat, seafood, deli, ready meals, snacks, beverages, international foods, frozen and household items, wholesale items, baby and infant care products, pet food and supplies, and pharmacy and beauty products. Mayor Bill Peduto’s office said URA will now begin lease negotiations with Salem’s, which currently operates a market and restaurant on Penn Avenue in the Strip District, and the Hill District Shop ‘n Save store closed in March 2019. “Salem’s Hill District Market is a huge win for both Salems and the Hill District community,” Councilor Daniel Lavelle said in a statement. “It gives Salem the opportunity to grow and expand while providing the community with a much needed grocery store and restaurant. Additionally, given Salem’s well-established customer base, the new grocery store and restaurant will bring significant pedestrian traffic to Center Avenue.” This will help support ongoing efforts to rebuild Center Avenue as a business corridor. ”
