PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Polar Bear Club has canceled its annual New Year’s jump into the Mon River, but that hasn’t stopped a group of die-hard people from taking the plunge alone.
A small group of people gathered at Mon Wharf that New Year’s morning.
Despite the freezing temperatures and freezing rain, they put on their bathing suits and jumped into the cold river.
“We’re glad we were able to get down here and everyone was ready to give us our quick jump. We will now disperse and do our business, ”said Joe Vargo of Bellevue.
They say it is a matter of tradition for them.
The official event had to be canceled this time due to the coronavirus pandemic.
