Social distancing, sporting masks impacts little one growth – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Playing with people of the same age is an important part of child development. However, children are not as sociable because of the pandemic, which is what leads to the results, according to doctors.

“We saw some language delays and more social anxiety. A child’s inability to leave their parents and play with other children, ”said Dr. Joseph Aracri, System Chair of Pediatrics at AHN.

Dr. Joseph Aracri said this is especially the case for young children.

“What happens in this phase of child development is when a child leaves their parents. They try to separate from their parents and find out their own identity. Why do they get tantrums, ”said Dr. Aracri.

Doctors say quarantine doesn’t make things easier. It is for this reason that Philip Oskoui sent his 4-year-old son to preschool.

“We thought it was important to go to school and connect with other children because there are things like falling off a climbing structure and learning how to resolve differences,” said Oskoui.

Pediatricians say masks can make it difficult for young children to understand what someone is saying.

“Things like flexion, reading social cues, facial expressions. Here, too, we see a delay. These children misinterpret what is going on around them, ”said Dr. Aracri.

What should parents do?

Pediatricians recommend taking your children outside when the weather is nice to play with other children in places like the playground. This gives them the opportunity to socialize and have fun at the same time.

However, if you are more comfortable keeping your little ones at home, doctors say there are other things to consider.

“Then make a capsule. You have a couple of parents who have children. Anyone who can be vaccinated is vaccinated and allows these children to play together in a safe, mask-free environment, ”said Dr. Aracri.
