Local artisans and artists, like last weekend at the Handmade Arcade in Pittsburgh, have been preparing to have products ready for months, and consumers like knowing they can take their gifts home with them when they buy.

“You can see it and take it off the shelf and put it in your pocket and you have it, so it’s much more comforting to have it with you,” said Caroline McCully of Mount Washington.

Many shoppers also say they’re happy to support stores that closed last year and lost a lot of stores, as well as manufacturers struggling without the big craft fairs.

Tricia Brancoli-Foley is the CEO of Handmade Arcade.

“They’re really giving back to Pittsburgh’s creative industries in such a meaningful way,” she says. “Fifty dollars in the pocket of a manufacturer in the city of Pittsburgh goes so much further for the city, for the art in the community, than if you bought it in one of those big stores.”

Many of the local artists and artisans sell their wares online and you can pick them up in person or have them shipped to you.
