Steelers, JJ Watt blow up Aaron Donald’s DPOY win over TJ Watt

The NFL Awards came and went on Saturday night and the most controversial decision was on the defensive side of the ball.

Los Angeles Rams superstar Aaron Donald took home his third award for Defensive Player of the Year, putting him in a duel with Lawrence Taylor and JJ Watt for most of the time. Usually it wouldn’t be surprising if the game’s most dominant defensive player plays on the game’s most dominant defense and wins the award, but there was at least one team that thought otherwise.

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker TJ Watt had a year that some believed was a stronger year than Donald’s. It collected more sacks, tackles against losses, QB hits, and defended passes. Of course, comparing statistics between indoor linemen and edge rushers can be shaky, but many close to Watts responded indignantly at the nudge.

Including watt itself:

Both of Watt’s NFL-playing brothers got involved, too, and one of them brought stats to the table:

Aaron Donald is an absolutely incredible player. I love to see him play and he goes into the Hall of Fame without question. This has nothing to do with AD personally.

I say what my brother doesn’t want.

TJ played 1 game less and STILL led the NFL in all major categories.

And of course, many Watt’s Steelers teammates have publicly voiced their complaints:

TJ Watt is my DMVP this year. You’re not paying attention. Respect is long overdue

I feel for TJ Watt’s mane. He deserves this award. AD my brother and a BEAST, but TJ deserved it.

Donald also had teammates.

The story goes on

The most outspoken of them, star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, wouldn’t criticize Donald’s award:

Lol ikno people who don’t really ask if AD DPOY should have won. Yoo this is crazy. There are some ELITE defenders in this league for sure and if 99 weren’t in the league I would hear it, but he really is the greatest. Carry on, you are about to hurt Oline
