The craft beer brewing scene in Pittsburgh has gone from a creek to a full-fledged tsunami over the past decade, with different locations popping up every week. So much so that it can cause inevitable fatigue for those not obsessed with the world of craft beer. So what’s the best way to stand out? Make a better beer. That’s what Four Points Brewery did, and only once each time: Blackberry + Boysenberry is my new favorite.
Forpoint, which specializes in IPA, has established itself in a variety of styles as the breweries continue to expand. Many of the locals who started out in Charles Roy, about an hour south of downtown Pittsburgh a few years ago, may not have been looking for beer. However, Four Points continues to expand its distribution in the city and creates a new, absolutely beautiful taproom on Western Avenue on the North Side. In contrast to the many wooden barrels and the coffee shop atmosphere of many taprooms, the Four Point Spots are sophisticated, elegant and comfortable.
Only once each time: Blackberry + Boysenberry is the latest in a range of sours with a spinning fruit combination. Following the increasing trend towards rich sour, we have achieved smoothie-like quality. But more importantly, Four Points not only confirm the sweetness of the beer, but also preserve the actual acidity of the beer. It’s sweet, but like many beers, the delicacy and restraint of Every Time Only Once helps make it stand out.
At 7% vol. Four Points rebalances between beer that is just a low alcohol breaker and beer that pushes the acid into the liquor area. The flavors of blackberries and boysenberries complement each other very well (although I’m not sure if I’ve ever eaten real boysenberries in my life) and perhaps most importantly, lactose. Adds a very different element and adds a vanilla twist that is reminiscent of berries and creams.
The world of sour beer is spiraling out of control and every place is trying to overtake itself in the maddening of the latest happenings. These have seats, but in the meantime, soak up the lovely summer acidity of the world-class Pittsburgh brewery. You too get your fruit and drink it.
