“We do not have grocery shops:” Pittsburgh neighborhood will get resolution from Large Eagle – WPXI
PITTSBURGH – Giant Eagle has taken a step closer to eliminating food deserts in Pittsburgh with the establishment of a grocery collection point in Sheraden.
Sheraden Community Council vice president Deborah James Bailey said the sherad community has long suffered when it comes to food options.
“We don’t have any grocery stores here, our seniors haul shopping carts down to Giant Eagle or McKees Rocks to Kennedy to go to various stores; now you don’t have to, ”she said.
The grocery pick-up point in Sheraden is on the Jasmyne Nyree campus.
Giant Eagle will now also accept EBT payments online.
“Making EBT online payment accessible is a critical way to overcome this final hurdle. Not only can we get you the groceries, but we can also ensure that you can pay for it in the way that makes the most sense for you, ”said Dan Donovan, spokesman for Giant Eagle.
Giant Eagle buyer Phoenix Lagoon makes frequent use of the roadside pickup on the south side of the Giant Eagle, especially during the pandemic, and believes that pickup points will see an increase in customers now that EBT is accepted.
“Many of the people who get EBT cards are disabled and have difficulty finding their way around. Giving you that option is going to be of great help to countless people, ”said Lagoon.
It is progress that Sherade leaders know their community will appreciate.
“This is a big thing for our church. Big deal and this will open the door and no one will be deprived of food after passing through this facility, ”said Bailey.
People who do not have internet access can simply go to the pick-up point in Sheraden and help there directly.
