Wendy plans to open 700 delivery kitchens by 2025 to meet growing demand from people who want to bring in fast food.

According to Wendy’s, kitchens operate primarily in urban areas in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The Hamburg chain will open its first 50 delivery kitchens this year.

Wendy’s, based in Dublin, Ohio, is a Miami company that operates 5,000 delivery kitchens in 30 cities around the world and is affiliated with Reef Technology Inc.

In a conference call with investors on Wednesday, Wendy’s President and CEO Todd Penegor said Reef would build a place and hire kitchen workers. Wendy’s receives license fees of approximately 6% of sales.

Wendy didn’t say who would deliver the food. However, the company has existing partnerships with third-party providers like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub.

Demand for restaurant deliveries was already high before the pandemic, but rose sharply when the restaurant closed its canteen last year. According to The NPD Group, 3.3% of U.S. restaurant traffic for the year ended June 2019 was deliveries. This sum rose to 8.4% in June 2021.

According to Wendy’s, digital sales (including mobile delivery and pick-up orders) reached 7.5% of total sales in the second quarter of this year. This is an increase from 2.5% in 2019.
