If you’ve ever worked in a building where your office is so cold that you type in gloves while your neighbor’s room is so hot that they sweat, you know that air conditioning in large buildings is sometimes unreliable.
In the latest episode of Tomorrow’s World Today, field reporter Tamara Krinsky makes her way to the Cadillac Fairview headquarters in Toronto to learn how they use natural resources to help with air conditioning.

Krinsky learns about Enwave Energy’s Deep Lake Water Cooling System, which transports the cold water from the bottom of Lake Ontario through a filtration system and then to a heat transfer station to generate the energy to cool buildings in downtown Toronto. She also talks about Cadillac Fairview’s retrofit initiative for Geoexchange, which collects heat and stores it underground for use in winter. What is special about their initiatives is that they are retrofitting existing buildings. The rental space was unaffected from start to finish of these projects, and in turn, the projects significantly reduced the building’s operational carbon footprint and reduced operating costs. In addition to learning about sustainable air conditioning technology, she also discovered an innovative on-site waste disposal technology that dramatically reduces the environmental footprint of some of the busiest offices and retail spaces in Canada.
