People who are fully vaccinated are not allowed to wear a mask unless a company or organization such as a school requires masks, the Pennsylvania Department of Health said Friday. The health department said this is in line with updated masking guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “When you are fully vaccinated, being able to remove your mask is an incentive, but businesses and workplaces may still need this as an extra layer of protection for their employees or customers who may have underlying conditions that continue to make them vulnerable to this virus. We urge Pennsylvanians to continue to be kind and respectful of one another as we continue to fight COVID-19 in our communities. Let residents keep vaccinating, “Acting Health Secretary Alison Beam said in a press release. The CDC guidelines state that fully vaccinated individuals – two weeks after their final dose – can resume their pre-pandemic activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing themselves, unless required by law, statute, and government , including local businesses and workplace counseling. Some business owners still don’t want to take chances. At Ribs’ N Bread in Oakland, owner Rander J. Thompson said he would continue to need masks. “I want to put a mask on, I want you to put a mask on. It won’t hurt to be safe,” Thompson said. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 also spoke to attorney Kevin Levy, who reiterated that companies have the right to require customers to wear a mask if they choose, but companies are wise to make their policies known to customers. “Most, if not all, of enforcement is up to companies. I think they need to figure out what makes the most sense for them in their community,” Levy said. With this guidance, people must continue to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other public transit systems that operate in, within, or outside the United States, as well as in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and train stations. In addition, all individuals should continue to obey instructions in workplaces, local businesses, long-term care facilities, hospitals, prisons and shelters for the homeless. The Minister of Health’s universal order on face covering remains in effect and unvaccinated individuals, including children, must continue to obey the order. Once 70% of Pennsylvania 18+ are fully vaccinated, Pennsylvania will lift the masking order. According to the CDC Vaccine Tracker, 47.4% of adults ages 18 and older in Pennsylvania are fully vaccinated as of Friday, May 14.
