Duquesne Soccer Eyes NEC Shortened Spring Season Title – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Like most college football programs for small schools, Duquesne postponed its season last fall in hopes of playing this spring.

Right now, the dukes aren’t just playing – they are winning.

After a dominant performance at home on March 21st against Long Island, Duquesne made a 3-0 start in the shortened schedule of the NEC conference. They have a chance to win an NEC title this spring, and they say a championship will have the same weight regardless of when it is taken.

“When this ball is kicked off, they don’t know what time it is,” said Duquesne coach Jerry Schmitt. “They just want to play football and they enjoy it.”

“Every time you represent your school and play for a championship with your teammates, it means something,” said Joe Mischler, Duquesne quarterback. “Whether it’s a COVID year or not, or whether it’s autumn or spring, it still has the same weight, the same meaning. That’s how we’re going to treat it. “

One of the main reasons the Dukes fly high is the addition of Mischler, who moved from Ohio University. Mischler was a two-time Pennsylvania Player of the Year at Erie Cathedral Prep, where his father is the head coach.

“Being the child of a coach helps a lot,” said Mischler. “When I was born, I didn’t have blue teddy bears in my cot. It was a soccer ball. “

Despite being a four-game season, the Dukes have a chance of finishing unbeaten on Sunday with a win. Schmitt wasn’t sure if this could ever happen.

“When the athletics director spoke about it last fall, it was an everyday situation. Sometimes it’s literally an hourly situation, ”said Schmitt. “But if you accept that, you can enjoy it. I like to train soccer. “

The Dukes have already secured a spot in the NEC title game. With a win at Bryant on Sunday, he would be the title game at Art Rooney Field on Duquesnes campus.
