Houston locations 5 gamers on IL on account of COVID-19

Breaking News: Before the start of today’s Detroit Tigers v Houston Astros game, the Astros placed five players on the COVID-19 IL.

For the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak last season, the Detroit Tigers experienced the tremendous impact of the virus firsthand when Houston bet the following players on the IL:

  1. DH Jordan Alvarez
  2. 2B Jose Altuve
  3. 3B Alex Brgeman
  4. IF Robel Garcia
  5. C Martin Maldonado

Infielder Taylor Jones, catcher Garrett Stubbs and infielder Abraham Toro have been recalled, and infielder Alex De Goti and outfielder Ronnie Dawson have been added to the list via MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.

With the loss of Alvarez, Altuve, Alvarez and Maldonado, the Astros lose four regular starters as they lost two in a row to the Tigers. After their series, they have a day off before heading to Seattle for a three-game series starting Friday. Then a day off on Monday before a two-game series in Colorado that begins Tuesday.

Last season, the Chicago Cubs were the only team in baseball that wasn’t affected by the COVID-19 virus. On Tuesday, the Cubs put Jason Adam, Dan Winkler, Matt Duffy and Brandon Workman on the list of COVID-19 injured. On the same day, the Toronto Blue Jays had outfielder Teoscar Hernandez test positive for the virus. Then the twins put the shortstop Andrelaton Simmons on the COVID-19 list of injured people today.

For the Detroit Tigers, Spencer Turnbull, who was put on the COVID-19 log as a precaution, will be back next week. He is scheduled to take on the alternative squad of the Cinnicinni Reds in Toledo tomorrow evening in Toledo. As Evan Woodbery reports, he is expected to play 4 to 5 innings.

The Houston Tigers travel to Oakland for a four-game series starting tomorrow, before taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 20.
