Janet Rae Palmer of Bluffton, SC passed away on Monday March 15, 2021.
Janet was born on March 5, 1936 and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After marrying Gray Palmer, they moved to Newport News, Virginia during Grey’s military service.
Cumberland eventually became her home for 35 years when they raised their two children. Then in 1996 they retired to Sun City, Hilton Head, SC.
Janet enjoyed an active lifestyle of walking, swimming, cycling, and playing tennis. Her passion for tennis was reflected in the many awards and accolades she had received from teammates over the years, as well as in her competition at national and state USTA tournaments. She will be remembered for her never-ending devotion to the game and as a loyal friend for everything she considered her tennis family to be.
Janet loved volunteering to serve others. During her stay in Cumberland, she volunteered in the school system and was Treasurer of Trinity United Methodist Church.
After moving to South Carolina, she continued to volunteer by reading books to children and teaching them at the Bluffton Library.
She was an avid reader and supported local libraries. Janet has always remained a dedicated Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan.
Janet is survived by her wonderful 66-year-old beloved husband, Gray Palmer; Daughter Cindy Palmer (Andy Levin), Sun City, Hilton Head; Son Mark Palmer (Katherine Palmer); Grandchildren, Elizabeth Van Wazer (Will Van Wazer) and David Palmer, Arlington, Va .; Sister, Carole Sweitzer, San Antonio, Florida; and brother Daniel Buckley, Philadelphia, PA.
The celebration of life will take place at a later date in Janet’s honor on the Sun City tennis court, Hilton Head.
