PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto stands by his recent testimony that teachers must be a priority in the Pennsylvania vaccination process.

From now on, teachers belong to the Commonwealth category “1B”.

Pittsburgh public school educators are pushing against returning to face-to-face learning until they’re all vaccinated.

Peduto says the city will pay for teachers to be vaccinated and urges the state to provide the doses.

“There are nearly 30 states that have prioritized teachers,” said Peduto. “Pennsylvania is not one of them. And teachers across the state should, in my opinion, be treated as first responders and those who deal with the public are in that initial response. ”

According to Peduto, the city would plan to partner with health networks for mass vaccination and could use places like recreation and senior centers as vaccination centers.

He said the city would be up and running in 72 hours if it had supplies.
