PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is enacting legislation to keep his promise to make Juneteenth a city vacation.

Last summer, Peduto made Juneteenth a public holiday in Pittsburgh by order. The mayor’s office announced on Monday that Peduto would submit a bill to the city council to make the holiday official.

Since June 19th of this year is a Saturday, it will be celebrated on June 18th.

The Department of Human Services and Civil Service legislation will be unveiled on Tuesday and discussed later this month.

“Throughout history, many have tried to silence black voices. We have arrived at a critical time where they are finally getting the attention they deserve – and they are being heard. Many of us, especially privileged white men, have not always listened as much as we should. It is now time to make this change permanent and officially put this holiday aside to celebrate black voices, ”Peduto said last summer.
