PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Steeler’s close end Vance McDonald was named the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee.
Every year, each team in the NFL names a player for their off-field service. Three finalists will be selected and the winner will be announced the night before the Super Bowl.
The Steelers selected McDonald for their work with Convoy Of Hope, a faith-based organization that provides outreach, disaster relief and child nutrition initiatives to those in need around the world.
In December 2019, McDonald and Convoy of Hope teamed up with the Steelers for their first “Huddle For The Holidays” at Heinz Field. The event provided the necessary items for 500 people and included children for seniors.
Necessary items included health and wellness screenings, haircuts, job placement, clothing, food, and even Santa’s workshop where kids were given brand new toys.
McDonald worked with Convoy Of Hope while with the San Francisco 49ers before being sold to the Steelers in 2017.
“My wife and I spent time in Pittsburgh and it’s become home, so we want it even more, for the community and the city,” McDonald said in an interview with the Steelers website. “It was so nice for people to see Heinz Field and walk around the field. The way people love the Steelers made them even more special. ”
After the COVID-19 pandemic, McDonald started the “Truck Of Hope” campaign together with his quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Convoy of Hope.
The campaign provided groceries, PPE, and cleaning supplies to families across western Pennsylvania.
