On September 25, 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was sworn in as the first female judge on the Supreme Court.

In 1513 the Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and saw the Pacific Ocean.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah first had women in local elections in 2015. Wangari Maathai, 71, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, died in Nairobi.

Five years ago: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump met separately in New York with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and brought new foreign policy topics to each candidate on the eve of their first presidential debate. Golf legend Arnold Palmer, 87, has died in Pittsburgh. Jose Fernandez, 24, right-handed ace of the Miami Marlins, died in a boating accident with two friends off Miami Beach. Country singer Jean Shepard, a Grand Old Opry classic, died in Nashville at the age of 82.

A year ago: The late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was in the US Capitol and made history as the first woman honored in America. With coronavirus numbers soaring across France, officials said the French Open tennis tournament only admits 1,000 spectators a day. Governor Ron DeSantis lifted all restrictions on restaurants and other businesses in Florida and banned local fines on those who refused to wear masks as he tried to reopen the state’s economy despite the spread of the coronavirus. The Mid-American Conference, the first major college football league to postpone its season because of the pandemic, is the last to re-enter, making it 10 out of 10 conferences that would be held this fall.
