Pittsburgh is the primary cease for ‘Subsequent Exit,’ Untappd’s new beer journey present

Untappd, a popular app that allows drinkers to check-in and rate beer, is launching a brew-centric travel show and its first stop is in Pittsburgh.

The inaugural episode of “Next Exit” will hit YouTube at 6 p.m. on Nov. 3. With help from local company Rocketfuel Studios, host Kenny Gould takes viewers on a journey of Pittsburgh Brewing Co.’s old and new locations and a few other hop-friendly watering holes.

“Pittsburgh has one of the best, hidden-gem craft beer scenes in the country. Period, end,” says Gould, a Steel City native. “I love watching our local favorites grow!”

So far, there are six, 15-minute installments planned. Audience members are encouraged to suggest different brew towns to visit.

Gould, who has organized beer events throughout the ‘Burgh, is excited about this new globe-trotting venture.

Last November, Gould sold Hop Culture magazine to Next Glass, the parent company of Untappd, BeerAdvocate, Ollie and Oznr. At the same time, he started as creative director at Next Glass, a role that allows Gould to take a deep dive into art and media for several different brands, all of which have their own culture and aesthetic.

In addition to hosting “Next Exit,” Gould is collaborating with Pittsburgh Artist Riley Mate on holiday merchandise that will be available through the Untapped Store. He’s also busy revamping Hop Culture’s social media platforms, developing a book and facilitating BeerAdvocate’s 25th-anniversary beer box.

He’s wanted to produce a brewery-hopping series for several years, but a perfectly poured pint isn’t always as visually stimulating as an artistically plated meal.

Gould took inspiration from the late Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown.”

“He’s a chef, but it’s not a food show,” Gould says. “It’s a travel show that uses food to get from place to place. For me, that realization was magic. Once I understood that I was making a travel show, everything else fell into place.”
